Progress on NASA Orion Project

Abstract
In December 2014, the Orion spacecraft was flight tested to high earth orbit, launched from Kennedy Space Center, and returned to earth in the Pacific Ocean off the Southern California coast. Significant flight test objectives were testing of the reentry heat shield at approximately 85% of lunar reentry velocity, test of several separation events during ascent including, launch abort system separation, parachute recovery systems tests, and checkout of landing recovery operations.

Mr. Geyer will provide a status on the overall development of Orion, results from the recent flight test, progress toward the next flight of Orion on the Space Launch System in 2018, and the first crewed flight of Orion. Mr. Geyer will also be able to discuss how Orion will be used in the overall human space exploration enterprise.
 

Bio

Mark S. Geyer is an Indiana native, who received his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Purdue University in 1982. He also performed his graduate studies at Purdue University, earning a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering in 1983. 

Mr. Geyer’s professional experience includes: Manager of the Russian Elements Team International Space Station, 1997-2000; Manager at the International Space Station Program Integration Office, 2000-2004; Manager of the System Engineering and Integration for the Development Program Division of the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., 2005; and Deputy Program Manager of the Constellation Program, 2005-2007. Since 2007, Mr. Geyer has been with NASA as the Program Manager at the Orion Program Office, where he is responsible for the day-to-day management, development, and integration of Orion system crewed exploration system.

Throughout Mr. Geyer’s career he has received multiple awards, showcasing his excelled skill and work ethic. He has been honored with the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 2000, the Space Flight Awareness Leadership Award in 2003, the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal in 2005, the NASA Meritorious Executive Rank Award in 2006, the NASA Distinguished Executive Rank Award in 2011, the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal 2012, and was a nominee for the Federal Engineer of The Year Award 2012.
