Open Rank Faculty Positions in Electrical and Computer Engineering

location: Charlottesville, VA
Full time
job requisition id: R0040873

The Charles L. Brown Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks well-qualified applicants for multiple Open Rank (Assistant, Associate, or Professor) Tenured/Tenure-track Faculty positions with expertise in Computer Engineering (CpE) topics. The ECE Department plans to aggressively grow the Computer Engineering program at UVA with new faculty who can collaborate with our existing faculty in both research and educational programs to build on recent successes in and around ECE, CpE, and the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). We seek excellent candidates from any research areas who can complement and expand on ECE’s existing strengths in current focus areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML), Integrated Circuits (ICs) for the Internet of Things (IoT), and Terahertz / Optical circuits and systems. Example research areas of interest for applicants include, but are not limited to, Artificial Intelligence (AI) hardware, Analog and Mixed Signal circuits, Networking and Communications for low-level or next-generation wireless systems, Embedded Hardware / Software co-design, Heterogeneous Integrated Systems, Integrated Lasers, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Mobile Computing, and technologies for Smart Cities and Smart Health.

The primary responsibilities for these positions include research, teaching, and service to the department and the community at large. The appointment rank will be commensurate with experience. A doctoral degree in a relevant field is required. A commitment to scholarship, funded research, and teaching excellence is essential, as is evidence of an explicit commitment to diversity and advancing understanding and outcomes for underrepresented groups. Preferred candidates will have a broad background in research areas relevant to Computer Engineering and an interest in innovative undergraduate teaching and mentoring, laboratory instruction, and capstone engineering project design and supervision. UVA is proud to have a strong culture of collaboration and collegiality and is committed to creating collaborative and diverse environments necessary to solve the next generation of research challenges.

In UVA’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Computer Engineering program is jointly administered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science (CS), facilitating close collaboration between the two departments, and students in Computer Engineering may be advised by faculty in either department. The departments are also founding members of the Link Lab, a multi-disciplinary center for research on Cyber-Physical Systems, the Internet of Things, and autonomous devices. We are therefore coordinating our faculty searches in these areas.  We are especially interested in candidates who have the potential to collaborate with colleagues in both departments.

If you are interested in the coordinated positions in CS, please read the CS ad and apply to the CS positions online here.

Candidates should submit the following required documents:
  • Cover letter that addresses your areas of research/scholarship and your interest in UVA
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Statement of research interests and plans and their connections to topics in ECE and CpE
  • Statement of teaching philosophy
  • Statement of demonstrated commitment or contributions to inclusive practices that create climates in which all stakeholders can achieve their maximum potential.
  • Contact information for at least three references. The search committee may contact the references to request letters.
Please note that multiple documents can be uploaded at the link referenced above.

Review of completed applications will begin December 1st, 2022. The positions will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
