Job Summary
This position will be filled as an Instrumentation Engineer / Scientist or as Senior Instrumentation Engineer / Scientist. The hiring manager will determine the job level based on the skills, experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.
The Amy Instrumentation Facility in the Department of Chemistry at Purdue University has a long standing tradition of collaborating with faculty to develop new and novel instrumentation hardware and methodologies to solve cutting edge research and education objectives. We pride ourselves in applying / developing new technologies to further science. We have an opening on our team for a highly motivated / self-starting individual seeking to apply their skills in this unique facility where innovation is the norm. The successful candidate will serve as a consultant to faculty, staff and students in the specification, design, fabrication and repair of scientific equipment / instrumentation that is generally not commercially available. The Instrumentation Specialist will be responsible for circuit design / fabrication, software design / programming, hardware construction, system integration, testing and documentation of apparatus to meet customer needs. A Senior Instrumentation Specialist will also serve as project manager on larger projects requiring coordination of others to complete multiple tasks.
Instrumentation Engineer / Scientist
Required:
- Bachelors in Electrical Engineering or closely related field
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in design/repair of electronic and/or electromechanical systems
- In lieu of degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience with general productivity software and software specific to PCB layout and CAD
- Skill in the use of electronic test equipment and circuit design / layout software
- Ability to conceptualize functionality of subassemblies in complex systems and identify problems, analyze information and implement solutions with sound judgment
- Possess a learning orientation to study and interpret technical documents, research literature and systems documentation
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure, multi-task, accommodate rapidly evolving project requirements, pay close attention to detail, prioritize work, meet deadlines, and maintain confidentiality
- Excellent customer service skills and professionalism
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to influence and build work relationships within a diverse group of individuals
Preferred:
- Experience with micro-processor, FPGA, RF, automated system control and data acquisition
- Skilled in application of advanced mathematical and scientific software in solving complex problems
Senior Instrumentation Engineer / Scientist
Required:
- Masters in Electrical Engineering with significant electronics design experience
- A minimum of 2 years of postdoctoral or full-time employment in the development of new and unique instrumentation for scientific applications or other complex systems
- In lieu of degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proficiency in data acquisition software and hardware for instrument design and control
- Experience with general productivity software and software specific to PCB layout and CAD Skill in the use of electronic test equipment and circuit design / layout software
- Ability to conceptualize functionality of subassemblies in complex systems and identify problems, analyze information and implement solutions with sound judgment
