April 2003 Newsletter

In this issue:

MESSAGE FROM THE DEANDean Katehi

Purdue engineering is on the move! I am pleased to report that already the U.S. News Best Graduate Programs rankings are starting to reflect progress toward the vision of preeminence articulated by our draft strategic plan. In the April 14, 2003, issue, Purdue is ranked 9th among engineering schools! That’s up from last year’s 12th position and the prior year’s 13th rank.

Individual program rankings include: ABE - 2nd, IE - 3rd, AAE - 6th, CE - 7th, ME - 7th, NE - 7th, ECE - 10th, CmpE - 14th, ChE - 16th, and MSE - 19th. Analyzing the components that determine the U.S. News school rankings shows that growth in size of the research program and greater selectivity in graduate admissions were the key contributors to this year’s improvement. This substantial growth in our research and the greater student selectivity are the results of the hard effort and the vision of many individual members of the engineering community.

While the U.S. News rankings do not follow widely acceptable criteria for quality and are based on self-reporting and qualitative assessments of industry recruiters and academics, they do provide information that prospective students, both undergraduates and graduates, are using as a basis for selecting their institution.

We are very pleased with this year’s rate of progress; however, we still have much to do to achieve our aspirations. We will further improve our programs and increase our visibility in national and international policy and technical forums. We will also make industrial, academic, and governmental participants in such forums aware of our planned strategic growth in faculty size and 60% increase in new laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities. And last but not least, we will work hard to increase our faculty membership in the National Academy of Engineering. I personally feel very comfortable that we are on a good path to success: we have a vision of making Purdue the leader in engineering and the desire to accomplish this goal.

Linda Katehi
