To address this need, the course MSE 597I Introduction to Computational Materials, aimed to junior/senior undergraduate and graduate students, has been designed to convey concepts and ideas that address the numerical description of the equilibrium and kinetics of materials. To attain the goals of the course, two computational tools, OOF and FiPy, have been incorporated to the class. OOF was used to calculate the spatial distribution of physical fields and the macroscopic properties from images of real or simulated microstructures and FiPy was used as a tool to solve partial differential equations. To investigate students’ perceptions of OOF and FiPy as learning tools, two surveys were conducted focusing on learning outcomes, evidence of the learning, and pedagogical approach. By identifying, comparing and contrasting students’ perceptions of these two tools we discuss potential changes in classroom implementation as well as changes in the simulations’ interface design.

AJ Magana, RE García “FiPy and OOF: Computational simulations for modeling and…

Continue reading “AJ Magana, RE García “FiPy and OOF: Computational simulations for modeling and simulation of computational materials.” Proceedings of the 117th Annual Conference of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), Louisville, Kentucky, June. 20-23, 2010.”…

Continue reading "AJ Magana, RE García “FiPy and OOF: Computational simulations for modeling and simulation of computational materials.” Proceedings of the 117th Annual Conference of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), Louisville, Kentucky, June. 20-23, 2010."…

[45
56,55,48
https://engineering.purdue.edu/ComputationalMaterials/index.php/2017/11/04/uas-shaikh-a-j-magana-c-vieira-re-garcia-an-exploratory-study-of-the-role-of-modeling-and-simulation-in-supporting-or-hindering-engineering-students-problem-solving-skills-proceedings-o/
UAS Shaikh, A J Magana, C Vieira, RE García “An exploratory study of the role of modeling and simulation in supporting or hindering engineering students’ problem solving skills.” Proceedings of the 2015 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition, June, 2015.
11/04/2017
UAS Shaikh, A J Magana, C Vieira, RE García "An exploratory study of the role of modeling and simulation in supporting or hindering engineering students' problem solving skills." Proceedings of the 2015 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition, No volume, No page, June, 2015.
https://engineering.purdue.edu/ComputationalMaterials/index.php/2017/11/04/o-alabi-aj-magana-re-garcia-gibbs-computational-simulation-as-a-teaching-tool-for-students-understanding-of-thermodynamics-of-materials-concepts-journal-of-materials-education-375-6-239/
O Alabi, AJ Magana, RE García “Gibbs, computational simulation as a teaching tool for students’ understanding of thermodynamics of materials concepts.” Journal of Materials Education. 37(5-6), 239-260, 2015.
11/04/2017
O Alabi, AJ Magana, RE García "Gibbs, computational simulation as a teaching tool for students' understanding of thermodynamics of materials concepts." Journal of Materials Education. 37(5-6), 239-260, 2015.
https://engineering.purdue.edu/ComputationalMaterials/index.php/2017/10/31/microstructural-modeling-of-multifunctional-material-properties-the-oof-project/
RE García, ACE Reid, SA Langer, WC Carter”Microstructural modeling of multifunctional material properties: the OOF project” Continuum Scale Simulation of Engineering Materials: Fundamentals-Microstructures-Process Applications, 573-587. Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
