CPIASR builds stronger Colombia partnerships throughout August and September

CPIASR’s relationship with our Colombia partners grew even stronger during August and September 2011, with a crowning highlight of the summer being the warm reception CPIASR received from the president of the Republic of Colombia, President Juan Manuel Santos, at the conclusion of a national innovation summit Sept. 7-9th.  As shown below, Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos received the Boilermaker flag during a national innovation summit in Colombia attended by several CPIASR members. President Santos received the flag from Dr. Arden Bement, director of Purdue’s Global Policy Research Institute. CPIASR members also had the opportunity to interact with several high-level members of President Santos’ staff, including Ministra of Education Maria Fernanda Campo.

Purdue faculty and staff members participating in CPIASR’s efforts at the summit included: Dr. Arvind Raman, professor of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Rick Cosier, former dean of Krannert School of Management, Dr. Arden Bement, head of Global Policy Research Institute, Dr. Gerhard Klimeck, professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Carolyn Percifield, director of strategic planning and assessment for the Purdue College of Engineering.

Other key accomplishments from August and September 2011 include:

  • Dean Jamieson of the College of Engineering was a guest at the 150th anniversary celebration of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia’s College of Engineering. At this event, Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos honored Purdue by mentioning in his speech the university’s commitment to quality public education and research.
  • Dr. Jean Paul Allain, associate professor of Nuclear Engineering, met with 8 CPIASR partner universities to begin securing memorandums of understanding;
  • Several faculty and administrators met with the Colombia Ministry of Education; Ecopetrol; Universidad Nacional de Colombia sede Bogota; Universidad del Rosario; and Colciencias. CPIASR participants included Dr. Jean Paul Allain, associate professor of Nuclear Engineering; Dr. Arvind Raman, professor of Mechanical Engineering; Dr. Abhi Deshmukh, head of the School of Industrial Engineering and Angela Diaz, managing director of Global Policy Research Institute.
  • Dr. Raman and Carolyn Percifield, Director of Strategic Planning and Assessment for the College of Engineering, attended the Latin American Consortium of Engineering Institutions (LACCEI) in Medellin;
  • Dr. Jean Paul Allain and Dr. Arvind Raman traveled to Universidad de Caldas and Industrial de Santander for the first time. At the same time, Carolyn Percifield participated in an introductory visit to Universidad Tecnologica de Bolivar, Universidad Autonoma del Caribe and Universida del Norte;
  • Dr. David Janes, professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering visited the large public utilities company Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) for a planning meeting to develop Colombia’s first nanotechnology center. In the same visit, Dr. Janes also visited with nanotechnology researchers at Universidad NacionalMedellín
  • Dr. Morris Levy, professor of Biology, and his wife Maria Levy, a Bogota native, visited with Ruben G. Echeverría, the director general of International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT).
  • Dr. Allain visited Universidad del Norte and Universidad Tecnica de Bolivar. Dr. Allain also spoke at an energy conference with Juan Ernesto de Bedout, group president of Latin American operations for Kimberly-Clark and Purdue’s Advisory Council Chair;
  • Dr. Mike Ladisch was an invited presenter at The Bio-Energy Conference of the Americas "BECA", an event of the international corporate conglomerate Bolivar cooperation with the Energy Research and Innovation Center of Medellin (CIIEN).
  • Nathan Mosier gave a plenary lecture titled “Biochemically Derived Liquid Biofuels from Plant Biomass” at the V Simposio Internacional de Biofábricas (5th International Symposium on Biomanufacture) at the National University of Colombia – Medellín. While there he also presented two seminars titled “Lignocellulose Recalcitrance and Pretreatment” and “Challenges in Fermenting Cellulose-Derived Sugars.”
