RESEARCH INTERESTS

Wave propagation in elastic solids via Computational Mechanics:  My current research interests are in the understanding of different phenomena associated to propagation of elastic waves in solids, considering different length scales, e.g., seismic wave propagation and soil-structure interaction effects, determination of dispersive properties for structured cellular materials, wave propagation analysis in micropolar solids.  For that purpose much of my work requires the development and/or implementation of state of the art numerical simulation techniques based on classical and non-classical (e.g., Cosserat like) continuum mechanics models.  These techniques are implemented in in-house software or in commercial codes assimilating user subroutines like ABAQUS and FEAP.

FUNDED PROJECTS

Topographic effects and soil-structure interaction: We try to understand the combined effect of topography and structural characteristics on the propagation of seismic waves.

Characterization of micropolar models through wave propagation analysis: In this project we intend to characterize the capabilities of a Cosserat micropolar continuum model to describe microstructural effects at different length scales, using wave propagation analysis.  For that purpose we use explicit simulations detailing micro-structural features, Bloch wave analysis in unit cells and simulations in micro-polar half-spaces.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Professor Jaramillo is currently focused in seismic wave propagation problems and more particularly in trying to understand the amplification or de-amplification experienced by seismic waves once they interact with the soil surface or the soil-structure interface and due not only to the surface geometry but also to the geometry between the different sub-surface contacts.

  • Seismic Response of Buried Pipelines.  (Funded by Colciencias and EAFIT.)
  • New model for the seismic response of unreinforced masonry buildings.  (Funded by Universidad de Medellin, EAFIT, SURAMERICANA, CAMACOL and SOLINGRAL.)
