Nicole LiBretto Recognized with 2019 CISTAR Mentoring Award

(May 23, 2019) –Nicole LiBretto, CISTAR Fellow at Purdue University was recognized with the 2019 CISTAR Mentoring award for being an excellent role model to Research Experience Undergraduate (REU) students, Research Experience for Teachers (RET) and Young Scholar high school students. LiBretto was presented the award by Michael Harris, CISTAR Workforce Development Director, at the 2019 CISTAR Annual Meeting that took place May 20 through May 25 at Purdue University.
CISTAR Graduate Fellows, like LiBretto, mentor students and teachers in the summer programs as well as undergraduate students. LiBretto was chosen for this year’s award for her work as mentor to a group of nine young scholars, REUs and RETs during the 2018 summer session, and other undergraduates throughout the year. Some of her mentees commented on her leadership and was mentioned during the presentation of the award:
“Nicole has been an impactful role model in my life and has allowed me to become a better researcher, student, and individual. She showed me patience when I first started and is both knowledgeable and approachable. Her trust in me in the lab allowed me to grow and explore while her guidance allowed me to become a good mentor of my own.”
“Nicole has been instrumental in encouraging me to explore opportunities such as graduate school as well as presenting my research on campus.”
LiBretto is a third-year graduate student in Jeff Miller’s research group. As part of the award, she will also receive a $500 monetary prize.
