The Art of Riveting

Students at Bowen Lab have begun learning the art of Riveting in preparation for fabrication of 15 full scale steel girder specimens which will be tested for internal redundancy.  Vern Mesler, a metal craftsman and adjunct welding instructor at Lansing Community College, spent a day with students teaching the finer points of how to produce properly formed rivets capable of structural loads.  The specimens (some of which will be riveted and others bolted) are part of the PhD dissertation project for Matt Hebdon under the direction of Professor Robert Connor.  He will be testing to quantify the fatigue capacity of built-up beams with partially fractured members.  More information on the project can be found at  Additional photos can be found at and on the BSAC Facebook Page.
