G.A. Leonards Lecture and PGS Workshop
The Purdue Geotechnical Society is pleased to announce the 13th edition of the Purdue Geotechnical Workshop and 13th G.A. Leonards Lecture that will take place on Friday April 24, 2015 on the Purdue campus in West Lafayette, Indiana. The lecture has been given each year since 2003 in honor of Professor G.A. Leonards, a Purdue faculty member from 1946 to the mid-1990s and a great of the geotechnical engineering profession. The 2015 PGS workshop is entitled "Geotechnical Engineering From Theory to Practice," a theme inspired by the topic of this year’s lecture. The 13th G.A. Leonards Lecture entitled "Karl Terzaghi (1883-1963) - Geotechnical Engineer and Founder of Soil Mechanics" will be delivered by Prof. Richard E. Goodman of the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to his many contributions to geotechnical research, education and practice, Professor Goodman is THE expert on Terzaghi, the engineer and the man. We are thrilled that he has accepted our invitation to give the Leonards Lecture and share with us his unique knowledge on this fascinating subject. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Krannert Auditorium at 4:30 p.m.
The Leonards Lecture was established in 2003 in honor of Professor Gerald A. Leonards, one of the giants of the geotechnical engineering profession.
Professor Gerald A. Leonards was born on April, 29, 1921 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He obtained his BSCE at McGill University in 1943 and received both MSCE and PhD from Purdue in 1948 and 1952, respectively. He was a faculty member at Purdue from 1952 to 1991, when he was named Professor Emeritus.
