Three CE faculty receive College of Engineering Faculty Excellence Awards

The annual Purdue College of Engineering Faculty Excellence Awards honor faculty who have been selected by their peers as the most outstanding in fields such as research, engagement, mentoring, and teaching. Three Lyles School professors received awards at the 2019 ceremony – Larry Nies, Professor of Civil Engineering and Environmental and Ecological Engineering; Santiago Pujol, Professor of Civil Engineering; and Andrew Whelton, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and Environmental and Ecological Engineering.

The annual Purdue College of Engineering Faculty Excellence Awards honor faculty who have been selected by their peers as the most outstanding in fields such as research, engagement, mentoring, and teaching. Three Lyles School of Civil Engineering professors received awards at the 2019 ceremony.

Larry Nies, Professor of Civil Engineering and Environmental and Ecological Engineering; Santiago Pujol, Professor of Civil Engineering; and Andrew Whelton, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and Environmental and Ecological Engineering.

The Faculty Excellence Award for Online Education was given to Prof. Larry Nies. Nies was chosen for his leadership in online education in the College of Engineering exemplified in his popular course Global Sustainable Engineering, which challenges and inspires students around the world.

Associate Prof. Andrew Whelton was chosen for the Faculty Excellence Award for Early Career Research. Whelton was recognized for his field-leading research on drinking water contamination and the environmental risks of nanoparticles that exemplifies the profound societal benefits of publicly-engaged science.

Prof. Santiago Pujol was chosen for the Faculty Excellence Award for Impact on Industry. Pujol was recognized for his research leading to significant enhancements to the American Concrete Institute’s Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-19) that enable more efficient and economical construction of steel-reinforced concrete structures worldwide.
