Facilities in Civil Engineering

Purdue's status as a major research institution offers distinct advantages to undergraduate students. These includes interaction with outstanding faculty members on a daily basis, choices of a large array of course offerings, and possible involvement in research as laboratory assistants. State-of-the-art facilities include more than 20 research and undergraduate teaching laboratories, two large computer laboratories, and classrooms.

CE General Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories

The Lyles Family Ideas to Innovation (i2i) Laboratory allows the integration of lectures, hands on experimentation and computer simulation in undergraduate and graduate student labs.

Architectural Engineering

The architectural engineering research facilities include four full-scale experimental laboratories located at the Bowen Lab as well as the new Center for High Performance Buildings at Herrick Labs. All facilities are used for research and education in high performance and energy efficient building design and operation and indoor environmental quality.

Construction Engineering

Construction Engineering research includes: Web Critical Path Method (CPM) program; Web CYCLONE program; Construction Safety (CSA and NIOSH organizations); Emerging Construction Technologies; Multimedia Development for Construction; Simulations of Construction Operations; Active Research Capabilities; and Graduate Students' Projects.

Environmental Engineering

Environmental Engineering utilizes two laboratory facilities for undergraduate teaching as well as graduate education and research. These laboratories are located on the second (2nd) and third (3rd) floors in the Civil Engineering Building at Purdue University.

Geomatics Engineering

Geomatics Engineering's laboratory facilities give undergraduate and graduate students hands-on experience in the areas of surveying, photogrammetry, spatial data analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), and global satellite positioning (GPS).

Geotechnical Engineering

The undergraduate teaching laboratories and graduate laboratories in the Geotechnical Engineering area provide hands-on experience for the study of geotechnical aspects of Civil Engineering.

Hydraulic and Hydrologic Engineering

Hydraulic Engineering uses the newly renovated Christopher and Susan Burke Hydraulics and Hydrology Laboratory for teaching and research.

Materials Engineering

The nature and performance of Civil Engineering building materials are studied on the undergraduate and graduate level. Research facilities for the study of cement, concrete and bituminous materials are available.

Structural Engineering

The Bowen Laboratory contains powerful hydraulic presses, cranes and other equipment to test parts and materials for buildings, bridges and other structures. With more than 60,000 square feet, it provides up to six times more space than is currently available at Purdue for large-scale testing. Only five other universities in the country have similar facilities, but none are as modern as Bowen Laboratory.

The Karl H. Kettelhut Structural Engineering Laboratory and the SECSDE high-performance computing laboratory provide the excellent facilities for undergraduate teaching as well as graduate education and research in structural engineering, material testing, and integrated simulation of civil infrastructures.

The Steel Bridge Research, Inspection, Training, and Engineering (S-BRITE) Center engages faculty and engineers from around the country in order to explore partnership opportunities in training and research, utilizing some of Purdue’s existing strengths in education and research.

Transportation and Infrastructure Systems Engineering

The Transportation laboratory contains facilities for analysis of data and the development and testing of models for all aspects of transportation.
