Tornado Watch: notification indicates possible formation of tornado in a given area is likely

• Stay informed of conditions via: TV, radio, text message

Tornado Warning: notification indicates that a tornado has been sighted and poses a definite threat to a given area

• Seek Shelter Immediately
• Share notification with others; assist persons with disabilities, if possible
• Seek an interior hallway or small interior room of basement (or lowest level of building)
• Keep away from windows and doorways
• Try to obtain additional clarifying information (TV, radio, text message)
• Do not call 911 unless you require emergency assistance

If an active shooter is outside your building your best option may be to shelter in place:

• Proceed to a room that can be locked or barricaded
• Dial 911 if possible
• Close and lock all windows and doors
• Turn off lights
• Hide in an area that is not visible from outside the room
• Once secure, try to obtain additional information

If the shooter enters your office/classroom:

• Try to remain calm
• Dial 911 if possible
• Asses if you should:
  • Hide and shelter in place
  • Escape
  • Negotiate with shooter
  • Overpower the shooter with force (should be very last resort)

All bomb threats must be considered real until proven otherwise. All procedures should be implemented whether or not the bomb threat appears real.

• Stay Calm
• Clear the area and call 911
• If suspicious or potential bomb is discovered, do not handle the object

If a bomb threat is received by telephone:

• Do not put the caller on hold
• Do not attempt to transfer the call
• Do not hang up the phone that the call came in on
• If possible have someone else use another phone to call 911

If you discover a fire:

• Call for help: Dial 911
• Manually activate the building’s fire alarm system as you exit the building
• Close doors and windows as you exit
• DO NOT USE ELEVATORS

If caught in smoke:

• Try not to breathe in smoke
• Breathe through nose, cover mouth with shirt/towel
• Stay low to the ground and exit as soon as possible

If trapped in a building:

• If possible, move to a room with an outside window
• Close all doors and windows
• Fill cracks in door to keep smoke out of room
• Try to stay where rescuers can see you

Hazardous Material, Spill, Gas Leak, Odor Emergencies

If spills, releases, or incidents require special training beyond the abilities of those present:

• Immediately notify all affected to evacuate, exit the building
• Call 911 and report the incident
• If possible, seal off the affected area to prevent further contamination
• Do not try to clean up the spill
• If anyone is contaminated try to wash off the contamination
• Do not re-enter the area until directed by emergency personnel

If directed to Shelter in Place due to HAZMAT (hazardous materials) accidental release:

• Close all windows and doors
• Move to the designated “shelter in place” location or move to an interior ground room with the fewest windows for vents
• Do not use elevators
• Share notification with others; assist persons with disabilities, if possible
• Do not go outside or attempt to drive unless you are specifically instructed to evacuate
