Panama City Beach. South Padre Island. Daytona Beach. College students flock to these popular spring break destinations to relax and recharge. But for 15 students from Purdue’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, spring break was an opportunity to study abroad to experience new cultures, make new connections, and grow their skills in the field of biomedical engineering.

Zionsville-based life sciences company GeniPhys has completed a $6 million Series A round of funding, the company announced Wednesday. GeniPhys has developed a material known as Collymer, a highly-purified form of collagen that is used to support tissue generation.

Mikayla Roach, PhD student from Purdue University’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering has been selected for the National Science Foundation’s 2023 Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP). The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) has inducted BME Professor of Practice, Brad Duerstock, to their 2023 class of the AIMBE College of Fellows. This honor is one of the highest professional distinctions in the field of medical and biological engineering. The AIMBE College of Fellows consists of the top two percent of medical and biological engineers who have made outstanding contributions to the field.

HemaChrome, a digital health startup that uses smartphone technology to noninvasively and instantly measure blood hemoglobin levels, has won phase 1 of the National Institutes of Health’s RADx Tech for Maternal Health Challenge.

The inaugural pilot grant program focused on funding research projects related to cardiovascular health, cancer diagnosis and treatment, musculoskeletal health, otolaryngology and pediatric medicine.

OmniVis, which focuses on the speed, accuracy and economics of pathogen detection, has received $100,000 from the Purdue Ag-Celerator, an agriculture innovation fund.

OmniVis makes iSpyDx hand-held devices that rapidly detect pathogens in food, agriculture and water samples. The devices perform to laboratory method standards but do not require special equipment or training.
