  1. The MD-PhD BME program is led by four faculty members representing both the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and Purdue’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering.
  2. Purdue is renowned for medical device innovation, translation, and entrepreneurship; biomedical engineering faculty members at Purdue have been inventors on more than 100 issued U.S. patents, with over half licensed.
  3. A pioneer of biomedical engineering research at Purdue, Dr. Les Geddes, won the 2006 National Medal of Technology. Today, the Weldon School is a leader in biomedical engineering education and research in four signature research areas.  
  4. The innovative Martin C. Jischke Hall of Biomedical Engineering is strategically located in Purdue’s Discovery Park, a translational research-intensive area of campus. The facility’s interconnected, flexible, open-concept laboratories facilitate creativity and collaboration among faculty and students.
  5. The U.S. News & World Report ranked the Purdue College of Engineering graduate program #7 for 2019.
  6. The IUSM is the nation’s largest medical school. It is located on the 93-acre Indiana University Medical Center campus in Indianapolis, which includes four hospitals: University, Eskenazi Health, Roudebush Veteran’s Administration, and the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children.
  7. We guarantee all students in good standing full support throughout their medical school and graduate training. Currently, there are 8 total MSTP slots available per year.
  8. As of September 2016, 57 students are enrolled in the MSTP program, with approximately 26% pursuing a PhD in biomedical engineering.
  9. Our program prides itself on its diverse student population. Currently our student body represents: 46% female, 54% male, 19% underrepresented groups (Hispanic, African American, and Native American).
  10. Our students are successful researchers and communicators. Graduates have published an average of 2.4 first-author papers per student and a total of 7.8 papers per student. It is now required that a first-author publication must be in place prior to returning to 3rd year medical school.
  11. 28% of our 115 training faculty are physician-scientists or physician-engineers.
