Federal and Foundational Funding of Weldon School Research Doubles in Past Year

In an era when government funding for academic research and training is shrinking and thus competition for grants is fierce, the Weldon School has experienced an unprecedented growth in federal and foundational support.

In addition to the successful renewal of our NIH-supported Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) in collaboration with the Indiana University School of Medicine, new awards this year to single and investigator teams in terms of total dollars are doubled over the same period last year.

“Our increasing successes with large federal grant renewals and new research and training grants reflect an endorsement of our faculty-led research and student training programs that are in addition to applied research support from company partners and translation of technologies to industry,” said George Wodicka, professor and head of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. “This is a recognition of our fundamental discovery capabilities that seed our technology development and bring new medical diagnostics and therapeutics to market and thereby improve the quality of life for people around the world.”

Here are listed some of the new awards from government agencies, as well as foundations and nonprofit organizations from the past year. In this research-focused issue, we also feature three of the more recent large awards in related articles.“
