David K. Wood, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at University of Minnesota will be this week's presenter for the BME seminar series. His seminar, entitled "Engineering Microsystems for Advanced In Vitro Models of Pathology" will be at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16, in MJIS 1001.

Abstract: Our laboratory is focused on the development of engineered in vitro model systems that bridge the gap between existing in vitro culture systems and animal models to study mechanisms of pathology and to develop new therapeutics. We leverage microtechnology to control cell-cell interactions, tissue architecture, and physical and chemical cues at physiologic scales to recapitulate in vivo microenvironments while allowing control over critical parameters. In this talk, I will present our work in sickle cell disease, for which we have developed an in vitro platform to study sickle blood flow under physiologic levels of shear, pressure, and oxygen. I will also present our work in cancer metastasis, for which we have developed a microfluidic platform to study the processes of tumor cell extravasation, invasion and colonization of a metastatic site. I will discuss our recent results on the role of tissue resident macrophages in tumor cell extravasation.

Bio: David received his B.S. in Physics in 2001 at North Carolina State University and received his Ph.D. in Physics in 2007 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. David is currently an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota and directs the Living Devices Lab. The Living Devices Lab is focused on the development of advanced in vitro models of human pathology, and we have focus areas in sickle cell disease and cancer metastasis.
