Abstract:

Otolaryngology is the oldest medical specialty in the United States.  Its practitioners, commonly referred to as ENTs, diagnose and treat patients with disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and related structures from the base of skull to the upper chest, including salivary and endocrine glands, anterior and lateral skull base, and facial soft tissue envelope and skeleton.  Due to the specialized nature of the discipline, myriad technological innovations have allowed for the advancement of the field.  An overview of the Otolaryngology will be presented, breaking the field down into its various subspecialties and covering various challenges and technological innovations that have helped advance the art.  This is meant to facilitate understanding of key advancements in the field, as well as opportunities for further improvement, and collaboration with the Otolaryngology department at the IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis.
