Bioinformatics Seminar - Oct. 21

Event Date: October 21, 2014
Hosted By: Department of Statistics
Time: 4:30 p.m.
Location: LILY G126, WL campus
Faye Schilkey, Principal Lumenogix Inc.; Senior PI National Center for Genome Resources will present a seminar entitled "Bioinformatics in a Box: makes NGS data analysis easy" on October 21st.

Abstract:

Next generation sequencing (NGS) is now a de facto technique in molecular biology; significant advances in data generation have placed these methods within reach of most research budgets. However, increased availability of this technology and the ever-increasing data size introduce new problems. Processing NGS data requires substantial computational resources and expertise in analysis algorithms making it increasingly difficult for individual researchers to handle their own experiments. In this presentation we will demonstrate how investigators can easily overcome these barriers and process their own data using any browser-equipped Internet device. We will discuss cloud-computing technology that provides researchers with direct access to sufficient computing power to process even the largest NGS data sets, and easy to employ algorithms and techniques used in RNA-Seq expression analysis and DNA-Seq mutation detection - the two most popular NGS research fields.
