Andrew Koivuniemi, 2011 Geddes-Laufman-Greatbatch Award Recipient
Andrew Koivuniemi, an MD/PhD student in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering with Professor Kevin Otto, was awarded the Geddes-Laufman-Greatbatch Award. The award has been given every year since 1988 to recognize a student or post-doctoral fellow for outstanding research during an academic year.

The award was established by Dr. Leslie A. Geddes when he was awarded the 1987 AAMI Foundation's Laufman-Greatbatch Prize. Dr. Geddes received the award in recognition of the importance and unparalleled diversity of his contributions in Biomedical Engineering. He then took the prize and established the Geddes-Laufman-Greatbatch Award at Purdue for outstanding research in biomedical engineering by a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow.

The judging panel commented that from Andrew's MD/PhD application and undergraduate accomplishments, which included double majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Philosophy from Vanderbilt, he was one of the best candidates. He is committed to excellence and has very broad academic interests and expertise. He has been known to take on challenges as opposed to following a path of least resistance.

Recipients have their name placed on a permanent plaque in the Jischke Hall of Biomedical Engineering, plus receive a financial award and an individual plaque. Congratulations to Andrew for all of your hard work.
