Jennifer McCann Receives First Prize in Sigma Xi Poster Competition

Event Date: March 19, 2003

Jennifer McCann received top honors in the engineering sciences division of the campus-wide Sigma Xi poster competition. Sigma Xi, an international honor society of scientific and engineering research, sponsored the graduate student research competition. Students prepared an abstract and presented a poster at the competition in late February.

Jennifer's poster, entitled "Slight Geometrical Variations Across a Parallel Plate Flow Chamber Yields Non-Uniform Gene Expression," was based on her research work done under the supervision of Professors Tom Webster and Karen Haberstroh. In addition to having her abstract published in a booklet, she will also receive a cash award.

Out of 20 posters entered in the engineering sciences division, 9 were from graduate students in Biomedical Engineering, giving BME the largest representation of any school or department at Purdue. Julie Martin was awarded second honorable mention in the division.

The Purdue chapter of Sigma Xi was established in 1909 with a mission to foster and recognize outstanding research on the Purdue campus. There are currently over 400 active members who sponsor activities at all levels from high school through post-graduate and faculty.
