Indiana Commission for Higher Education approves Purdue undergraduate BME program

Event Date: July 9, 2001

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education approved at their April 13, 2001 meeting the offering of a bachelors degree program in biomedical engineering (BSBME) at Purdue University. Students in this program will be instructed in engineering solely in the context of life sciences and medical problems. Program graduates can expect employment in the medical device and products industry, whose key challenges are increasingly of a biological or physiological nature. Other opportunities will be found in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

BSBME candidates will enroll in Purdue's Freshman Engineering Program and undertake a dedicated biomedical engineering curriculum during their sophomore to senior years. New faculty hires and new facilities are planned to support programmatic offering and growth. The University expects to admit its first freshman students to the program by Fall of 2004 at the latest.
