BME Professors Honored for Outstanding Teaching

Event Date: May 17, 2000

Professor George Wodicka received the D. D. Ewing Best Teacher Award that is named after a former head of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Ewing Award directly reflects student views as the award is based on a weighted system of student voting over two semesters. Professor Wodicka received a plaque and a cash gift as a tangible reward for his outstanding teaching.

Professor Tom Talavage received the Ruth and Joel Spira Outstanding Teacher Award, also presented by the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). This award is made annually to a young faculty member who has displayed particular devotion to teaching. The recipient is selected by the Head of ECE. The award is made possible by a gift from Lutron in honor of the company's founders, Ruth and Joel Spira (BSME).

Professor Tom Talavage was one of twelve assistant professors chosen from throughout Purdue to receive a Junior Teaching for Tomorrow Award. Started in January 1997, Teaching for Tomorrow matches senior faculty \255 those with ten or more years of teaching experience and School or University teaching awards - with junior faculty members who have shown potential for excellence in teaching. This mentoring program allows professors to share teaching ideas, learning philosophies, and innovative techniques. Professor Talavage will receive a monetary gift to fund professional development activities that will enhance his skills as a teacher and scholar. The award is made possible by an endowment fund established by the Class of 1944 and the Class of 1945 to recognize and encourage good teaching through a combination of recognition and mentoring.
