Program Educational Objectives for Biological Engineering
Our educational objectives are published in the College of Engineering Catalog 2010-2011. They are also found on the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department website at http://www.ecn.purdue.edu/ABE/ The College Catalog is updated every two years, and the web page is continuously updated.
The educational objectives of the Biological Engineering program are to produce graduates who:
- effectively practice Biological and Food Process Engineering for the design and operation of systems for processing of biological materials to develop products for the food, pharmaceutical and biochemical industries.
- have demonstrated proficiency in fundamental engineering skills and technical knowledge as well as professional and personal skills appropriate for their profession.
- are prepared for future challenges and opportunities in the areas of food, pharmaceutical and biochemical engineering through the discovery and application of knowledge.
- learn and develop as individuals, contribute to the profession and global society, and attain maximum potential through life-long learning.
To achieve the program educational objectives, the Department will:
- recruit, support, and retain competent faculty and staff; and
- provide facilities and equipment to create an atmosphere conducive to learning and discovery and application of knowledge.
Biological Engineering Student Outcomes
The Student Outcomes (SOs) for the Biological Engineering (BE) Program are listed below. Graduates of this program will demonstrate:
- An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
- An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
- An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.
- An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams.
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
- An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
- An ability to communicate effectively.
- The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.
- A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.
- A knowledge of contemporary issues.
- An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
