Graduate Student New for April 2013

The College of Engineering held its Graduate Student Research, Teaching, and Service Awards program on April 9, 2013. Graduate students were recognized in three categories, and ABE was represented in all three.

  • Estus H. and Vashti L. Magoon Award for Excellence in Teaching - given to outstanding teaching assistants in memory of Estus H. and Vashti Magoon who have influenced the lives of many engineering educators early in their careers through this award: Ulhas S. Kadam
  • Award for Outstanding Researchers - goes to students who have demonstrated excellence in leadership in research through publications, participation in professional organizations, and willingness to mentor others: Brittany Newell
  • Outstanding Service Scholarship - presented to engineering graduate students who have provided outstanding service to the graduate student community, the School, the College, and/or the University: Jennifer Kahn

We are proud of all of our students - it is gratifying when others recognize their value as well. Congratulations!

Maha Fluid Power Laboratory News for April 2013

Site Visit

In April, the Maha Fluid Power Center will be hosting over 100 guests including National Science Foundation (NSF) and Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) representatives and board members and other CCEFP-sponsored universities professors and graduate students. This unique opportunity allows Maha both to represent Purdue University and to display the achievements accomplished during 7 years-to-date of NSF and CCEFP funding. Events include guided tours, machine demonstrations, poster sessions, and presentations.

Three of the five main research areas at Maha are supported by the NSF through participation in the CCEFP. This research includes advanced energy saving hydraulic actuators, advanced hydraulic hybrid power trains and control, and fluid structure interaction in critical piston machine interfaces. Maha students will also be presenting results on several “test bed” projects including a hybrid displacement-controlled mini excavator. The machine allows for a 50% downsizing of the engine while saving more than 50% fuel compared to best-available current designs.

Maha Abroad

Dr. Monika Ivantysynova, Dr. Andrea Vacca, Marco Zecchi, and Junjie Zhou will be presenting at the 8th Annual International Conference on Fluid Power Transmission and Control April 9-11 at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China.
