2017 April AgrAbility News

Indiana AgrAbility attended and exhibited at the 2017 Indiana Small Farm Conference held at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds in Danville, Indiana. AgrAbility staff attended sessions and visited with attendees concerning accessibility of their small farms. The display included AgrAbility popup banners, AgrAbility publications, Arthritis and Agriculture, Back impairments, Gardening and Agriculture, the Seedstock reprint, the Gaining Ground reprint, the AgrAbility 25 year Report, the NAP video, AgrAbility Harvest, and National AgrAbility Training Workshop save-the-date cards. In addition, there were publications from Vocational Rehabilitation Services, the Farm Service Agency, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. There were also resources for Beginning/Veteran Farmers and an opportunity for veterans to be involved with the Farmer Veteran Coalition. Cindy Chastain and other veterans in Indiana are starting an Indiana Chapter of the Farmer Veteran Coalition.

CofA Food Finders Food Drive

Each year the College of Agriculture hosts a food drive for Food Finders Food Bank in conjunction with Ag week.

We have a barrel in the 2nd-floor hallway by the main office where you can feel free to drop off any non-perishable food items. Their favorite items are:

  • 100% Fruit Juices
  • Baking items
  • Beans
  • Boxed rice and potatoes
  • Canned fish and meats
  • Canned fruits
  • Canned vegetables
  • Cereal
  • Drink Mixes
  • Laundry products
  • Macaroni & cheese
  • Meals in a can/box
  • Paper products
  • Pasta and meat sauces
  • Peanut Butter
  • Personal care products
  • Soups and stews

Please do NOT donate:

  • Rusty or unlabeled cans
  • Perishable items
  • Homemade items
  • Noncommercial canned or packaged items
  • Alcoholic beverages, mixes, or soda
  • Open or used items
  • Expired items
  • Bottled water

Soybean Product Innovation Contest 2017

ABE Students take top prize in the 2016-17 Purdue Student Soybean Innovation Competition!

Team FiltraSoy took top honors and $20,000 in the Student Soybean Innovation Competition Award Ceremony on Tuesday, March 28th at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Team members are Andrew Huang, Sushant Mehan, Samaneh Saadat and Anderson Smith, all from Agricultural & Biological Engineering.  Andrew and Anderson are in the area of Environmental & Natural Resources Engineering while Sushant and Samaneh are ABE PhD students.

The team designed and developed a soy-based HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), filter for use in residential and commercial applications.  The FiltraSoy entry is made from renewable resources and is biodegradable, making it more environmentally friendly and roughly 15% more effective than current high-efficiency HVAC filters available on the market.

Additionally the FiltraSoy Team earned the People’s Choice Award for getting the most votes from those in attendance at the Award Ceremony, which earned them an additional $500 cash prize!

The $10,000 second place award went to Team Soy Poofession, a soy-based non-toxic, non-hazardous, user and environmentally friendly odor-trapping before-toilet spray.  Team members are Food Science junior students Kuan-Ting Lee and Yudi Wen.

New this year was a third place award of $5,000 which was awarded to Team Soy Droplets, a soy-based, freeze-dried snack, consisting of a solid mixture of soy proteins, soy flour, starches, sugar, vitamins and vanilla extract.  Food Science senior students Peili Wang and Wenwen Zhou were Team Soy Droplet.


Team OilSlick was able to get over 600 “likes” on the Facebook page which earned them a prize of $100 each – this was a new social media award given the day of the Award Ceremony.  Team members are Haleigh Boss, Harshit Kapoor, Jessica Moster, and Viktoriya Stolyar.

Each student in the competition received an Amazon Tap as this year’s completion award.  The Amazon Tap is a portable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled speaker with full-range sound and a hands-free mode to ask and search for information on a wide range of topics.

This year was a record year for the Student Soy Competition with 16 teams successfully finishing comprising 50 Purdue students, and 32 Purdue faculty from all over campus and all degree areas.  A minimum of five provisional patents will be filed on these student products with potential for commercialization and possible student startup companies.

SpringFest 2017

Once again, our grad students led the way for a spectacular SpringFest weekend by providing popcorn and balloons, and featuring one of our robots. University estimates indicate we had about 40,000 visitors to campus on two of the prettiest days of the Spring. Enjoy the photos that Laura de Ortiz took for us!

Naturally, August Engelberth stole the show when he decided he didn't want to sit "bee-side" the bee, but on the bee's lap!
