For Agricultural Engineering, the Outstanding Senior is HannahJoy Pheasant; the Outstanding Junior is Jordan Garrity; and the Outstanding Sophomore is Caroline Schier. For Agricultural Systems Management, the Outstanding Senior is Eli Fred; the Outstanding Junior is Adam Sills; the Outstanding Sophomore is Joel Waterman; and the Outstanding Freshman is Peyton Hite. In the BE program, the Outstanding Senior is Sean Kearney; the Outstanding Junior is Jessica Wade; and the Outstanding Sophomore is James Nolan. Our Freshmen are considered Pre-ABE and our Outstanding Freshman is Sarah Cox.

Caterpillar’s Board of Directors has appointed Karl Weiss to replace Bluth as Caterpillar vice president with responsibility for the Earthmoving Division.

“During his 20-year career with Caterpillar, Karl has held positions with increasing levels of responsibility in the areas of product design, marketing, operations and product management, including significant leadership positions in North America, Europe and Asia,” said Ed Rapp, Caterpillar group president with responsibility for Construction Industries. “His previous leadership and success in these global positions has given Karl the type of deep expertise and international experience that provides an ideal background for leading our Earthmoving business,” Rapp added.

Since 2009, Weiss has been the world wide product manager for Caterpillar’s medium wheel loaders. Previously, he was Asia regional product manager for both Cat and SEM wheel loaders based in Beijing.

Weiss joined Caterpillar in 1992 as a design engineer in Caterpillar’s Mining Vehicle Center in Decatur, Illinois. Weiss was then promoted to a number of engineering, product support and product manager positions with increasing levels of responsibility.

Weiss holds a degree in agricultural engineering from Purdue University and a MBA from Northern Illinois University.

Breaking New Ground/Indiana AgrAbility exhibited and participated in the 1^st Annual Purdue Extension Indiana Small Farm Conference. The conference was held on March 1 and 2, 2013, at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds in Danville, Indiana. Twenty-seven exhibitors displayed a wide array of products and services.  The BNG display included an Arthritis and Ag poster, a tool board, the BNG popup, and various publications. Dr. Field led a discussion on “Small Farm Perils: Developing a Safety Culture on a Small Farm.”  Steve Swain staffed the display as well as moderated two sessions in the Small Farm Management track. Attendance at the initial event exceeded 300.

Special Visitors

Moog, Inc. visited Maha last month to view lab research and accomplishments. The team was proud to share their activities with an industry leader and looks forward to future interaction.

Additionally, Dr. Andrea Vacca introduced local Ivy Tech students and their advisor to the lab layout and projects.

Maha Outreach

Andrew Schenk (PhD Student), Mike Sprengel (PhD Student), Lizhi Shang (PhD Student), and Natalie Spencer (Master's Student) represented Maha at the COE Research Roundtable event. Six Maha SURF abstracts are currently posted for Summer 2013 applications.

Maha opened its doors for a lab tour for the Mechanical Engineering department's visitation weekend. This event allows prospective students to meet potential advisors and gain research assistantships.
