Project Legacy is a long-duration mission intended to establish a human presence on the surface of the Moon. Seven crews of four will spend two years living and working at a lunar base performing routine scientific experiments and hab maintenance. The lunar base primarily serves as an analog to Dr. Aldrin's vision of a mission to Mars as outlined in his book Mission to Mars: My Vision for Space Exploration. The mission is designed to test the capability of establishing a permanent human presence on another planet.
