The aim of this monograph is to present a unified geometric approach, based on the commutant lifting theorem in operator theory, to a large array of classical and modern interpolation problems arising in mathematics and engineering. For these interpolation problems, explicit formulas and algorithms are deduced from the geometric analysis of the commutant lifting theorem. Connections to geophysics, control theory and signal processing are also presented.
The monograph also includes a course on the theory of the commutant lifting theorem and develops new Schur-type fractional representations in the general framework of the commutant lifting theorem.
