Static and Dynamic Response of Sandwich Composite Panels: A New High Order Theory and Comparison with Elasticity

A new high order theory for orthotropic elastic sandwich panels is formulated. This new theory includes the compressibility of the soft core in the transverse direction as well as the in-plane rigidity of the core. It is proven, by comparison to the elasticity solution, that this theory results in superior accuracy, especially for the cases of stiffer cores, for which cases the other available sandwich computational models cannot predict correctly the stress fields involved. Thus, this theory, referred to as the “Extended High-Order Sandwich Panel Theory” (EHSAPT), can be used with any combinations of core and face sheets and not only the very “soft” cores that the other theories demand. The theory is derived so that all core/facesheet displacement continuity conditions are fulfilled. The solution procedure is outlined and numerical results are produced for several typical sandwich configurations. These results are compared with the corresponding ones from the elasticity solution. Furthermore, the results using the classical sandwich model without shear, the first order shear and other High-Order sandwich panel theories are also presented for completeness. Subsequently, the dynamic version of this new High-Order Sandwich Panel Theory is formulated. The goal is to study the blast response of a sandwich beam/wide plate. Material, geometric, and loading parameters are taken from blast experiments reported in literature. The accuracy of the dynamic EHSAPT can be assessed by comparison to a dynamic Elasticity solution. Results show that the EHSAPT is very accurate and can capture the complex dynamic phenomena observed during the initial, transient phase of blast loading.

Dr. Kardomateas has thirty years of research experience in the Mechanics of Structures and Materials, both conventional (metallic) and advanced (composite). He is the author (together with R.L. Carlson) of the book: An Introduction to Fatigue in Metals and Composites, published by Chapman and Hall, 1996, the author (together with L.A. Carlsson) of the book Structural and Failure Mechanics of Sandwich Composites, published by Springer in 2011 and the author (together with R.L. Carlson and J.I. Craig) of the book Mechanics of Failure Mechanisms in Structures, published by Springer in 2012. He is also the editor of four volumes published by the Applied Mechanics Division of the ASME as well as the author of over 110 refereed journal papers, over 120 conference proceedings papers and over 25 articles published as parts of books. His interests are in the area of Fracture Mechanics and Fatigue Behavior, Composite and Sandwich Structural Behavior, Stability, Mechanics of Nano-structured Materials and Mechanics of Piezo-Electro-Magneto-Elastic Solids. Dr. Kardomateas is a Fellow of the ASME and has served as the Chairman of the Applied Mechanics Division Composites Committee of the ASME and the Program Representative of the Aerospace Division Structures and Materials Committee of the ASME; he has also served as a Member of AIAA Technical Committee on Structures and the Stability Committee of the Engineering Mechanics Division of the ASCE. Dr Kardomateas is currently the Technical Chair of the ASME 2014 Congress. He is also currently an Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics and has served as an Associate Editor of the AIAA Journal and as a Contributing Editor of the International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics. He has also served as a guest Editor of the International Journal of Solids and Structures and of the Journal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures. Dr. Kardomateas obtained a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in September 1985 (thesis advisor: Prof. Frank A. McClintock) and subsequently was a Senior Research Engineer in the General Motors Research Laboratories until January 1989, at which point he joined the academic faculty at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Kardomateas’ research has been published in highly respected journals in the Mechanics area, such as the Journal of Applied Mechanics, the Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, the AIAA Journal, the International Journal of Fracture, the International Journal of Solids and Structures, the Philosophical Magazine, etc.
