American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is a professional organization for the aerospace industry. It encourages original research, furthers dissemination of knowledge, fosters the professional development of those engaged in scientific and engineering activities, improves public understanding of the profession and its contributions, fosters education in engineering and science as well as other professional groups, and stimulates outstanding professional accomplishments.
The Purdue Student Branch is dedicated to further fostering interest in the areas of aeronautics and astronautics, and to providing an avenue of communication between its members and the professional aerospace industry.
Our branch organizes events to teach about aircraft and space technology and to help students find jobs in the industry after graduation. We have set up rides in the Boeing 727 simulator at the airport and put together a field trip to the USAF Museum in Dayton, OH. Also, we have helped visiting companies, including Ball Aerospace and Dynetics, to set up lectures on their projects and information sessions for recruiting new hires. Every fall, our club works with the AAE department to collect resumes and distribute them on CD to aerospace companies.
The AIAA Indiana Section has dinner meetings every so often with speakers, at discount rates for students. In October, some of us went to the meeting in Indianapolis, where we saw a fantastic presentation on German aircraft developed during WWII.
There are a number of events we are planning for the remainder of the school year. Well continue to put together trips to the Indiana Section meetings and to set up rides in the simulator. Some other companies have expressed interest in sending speakers, so we hope to have some interesting lectures on what they are doing. In April 2006, we will be organizing a trip to the AIAA Regional Student Conference at Ohio State University. Near the end of the year, well be having our annual spring barbeque, open to the entire AAE department. Also, we are always happy to hear suggestions from our members as to what other events our club can do.
