SLIDE SETS: Teaching Aids for Structural Steel Design Courses
This series of slide sets can be used for instruction on beams, compression members, tension members, and combined forces. Pick and choose or incorporate all slides into your lectures.

TEACHING GUIDE: Incorporation of Writing Assignments into Steel Design Courses
This guide shows how assignments based on written review of articles on steel buildings can be used in steel design courses. Through these assignments, students look at how structures behave and consider alternative designs.

VIDEO: Single Story Building
This video shows the design and construction of a single story building from foundation to roof finish. Building components and their functions (i.e., how they support loads such as wind, earthquake, rain, and snow) are explained.

SLIDE SETS: Design Studio Case Studies
Students learn by analyzing precedent buildings that employ structural steel in aesthetic and creative applications. The buildings in these modules have all won AISC - IDEAS (Innovative Design And Excellence in Architecture with Steel) Awards. They represent a wide variety of scales, materials and tectonic expression: a 7500 S.F. house in Houston, Texas; a 37,000 S.F. river park complex along the Mississippi River; and a 30,000 S.F. complex at Iowa State University that includes a conservatory and butterfly house.

2012 NASCC Student and Educator Sessions

Don't (let yourself or your students) miss out on these great sessions!

AISC will again conduct a special student program at the upcoming NASCC, on Thursday, April 19, 2012 from 10AM - 2:30PM. Included is a morning session with career tips for entry-level job seekers from top industry professionals, as well as an opportunity to interact one-on-one with industry experts at our afternoon "Direct Connect" session. The students will also receive lunch and an exhibit hall tour. Bonus: Students who attend the entire Student Session will receive a complimentary ticket to the Thursday night conference dinner and up to $100 in expense reimbursement. We hope you'll encourage your students to attend!

Meanwhile, don't miss “Stability: Using Computer Software as a Virtual Lab for Learning Structural Stability” by Ronald Ziemian of Bucknell University, at the Educator Session, Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 8 a.m. to noon. For attendance at this Session, full-time faculty members can receive up to $300 for travel expenses. Be sure to register for both the NASCC and the Educator Session. E-mail Maria Mnookin at mnookin@aisc.org with your name and university to register for the Educator Session. Visit www.aisc.org/nascc to register for the NASCC or to download the Advance Program for more information (p.36).

Help to Shape the Future in Structural Steel Research

Your student could get a FREE registration to this Structures Congress workshop; see below for details and also plan to attend and join in the discussion yourself!

A limited number of free student registrations are available for the AISC- and NSF-supported workshop, “Innovation in Design of Steel Structures: Research Needs for Global Competitiveness” to be held Wednesday, March 28th in conjunction with the ASCE/SEI Structures Congress. The workshop, through moderated discussion, intends to bring together both leaders and emerging talent in the academic and design communities to specifically address the following:

What are the most promising areas of design innovation to increase US global competitiveness; and What fundamental questions about steel structural behavior, including response to extreme loads and resiliency, need answers to facilitate design innovation?

Graduate students involved in steel research may apply for free registration to the workshop by emailing a brief (maximum one paragraph) statement that provides an overview of their research and an idea for future research to Andrea Surovek, workshop chair, at surovek@sdsmt.edu, by February 10. The plan is to notify applicants by February 24 of the award decisions. Priority will be given to underrepresented students pursuing PhDs, but all students are welcome to apply. For more information, please see the ASCE/SEI Structures Congress Program or email Dr. Surovek.

Do you know the 14 Secrets of the 14th Edition?
Use SteelWise articles to brush up on your (and your students') steel know-how.

The SteelWise feature in Modern Steel Construction provides practical knowledge on a number of topics, ranging from stability analysis, to how choice of corrosion protection affects connection design, to practical considerations for expansion joints in buildings.

A January 2012 article, "14 Secrets of the 14th Edition," summarizes some of the lesser-known features of the 14th edition. This "inside look" provides information about new shapes, eccentrically loaded weld groups, prying action calculations, and bolt shear strength revisions, among other topics. Some items are new; others are carried over from the 13th Edition and supplemented with additional commentary.
