SLIDE SETS: Teaching Aids for Structural Steel Design Courses
This series of slide sets can be used for instruction on beams, compression members, tension members, and combined forces. Pick and choose slides to incorporate into your lectures. The slides are divided in the "theory" and "manual" sections; the "manual" sections have been updated to the 14th edition steel construction manual.

CASE STUDY : Four Story Office Building Case Study
Use this teaching aid to access hundreds of photographs and other graphical information that documents the process of detailing, fabricating, and erecting the steel frame for a typical building. Included is information on material procurement, sequencing, site logistics, schedules, and equipment, as well as technical aspects of the project.
Download the PowerPoint slides, the Digital Library Images, or browse the Case Study online for project drawings or specific photographs>>

LEARNING MODULES : Stability: Using Computer Software as a Virtual Lab for Learning Structural Stability
Learning modules provide a virtual lab for understanding topics such as elastic and inelastic flexural and lateral-torsional buckling, inelastic force redistribution, local buckling, and second-order effects. Modules utilize MASTAN2, software available at no cost.

How will you celebrate SteelDay?

October 4 is SteelDay, a free educational and networking function with events across the country.

Hosts are starting to post information about their SteelDay events. On October 4, 2013, thousands of participants across the country are expected to attend facility tours, site tours, seminars and webinars. AISC will host a free webinar, "The Life of the k Factor," by Charlie Carter, AISC Vice President of Engineering. More information will be posted at www.aisc.org/webinars. New this year is a STEEL-a-palooza music CD to be distributed at SteelDay events. AISC will select original, previously unpublished music from steel industry submissions.
Click here for more information and to find out how to participate in one of the many free SteelDay 2013 events.

Have you reserved AISC Manuals for your class?

Be sure to submit your reservation online so that your students can take advantage of the Student Discount Program.

Have you reserved AISC Manuals for your students? Visit www.aisc.org/studentdiscountprogram and submit your reservation for Manuals for the Fall semester. Contact University Programs (universityprograms@aisc.org) with any questions.

There's an app for that

Try AISC's new mobile app for bolts. Win a cash prize for your own steel app.

AISC has launched its first mobile app, called Build-A-Bolt. This app is helpful for determining dimensions and fastener compatibility, and for selecting the correct structural bolt, washer and nut combination, along with information on bolt grade and manufacturers. The release of this free app coincides with the launch of a new Steel Apps contest. Have an idea for an open source app for design, erection, fabrication or inspection of structural steel buildings and/or bridges? Submit your app by September 22, 2013, and you could win a cash prize! Winning apps will also be featured in Modern Steel Construction and announced on SteelDay. Read the press release on the bolting app and Steel Apps contest.

Night School

Registration will open this Fall 2013 for AISC's third Night School course.

Milek Fellowship

Proposals for the 2014 Milek Fellowship are now being accepted; submissions are due September 15, 2013.

Proposals are now being accepted for the 2014 Milek Fellowship, which is a four-year, $30,000-per-year award for promising, tenure-track, university faculty members to conduct structural steel research. Submissions will be accepted until Sunday, September 15. For more information, visit www.aisc.org/facultyfellowship.

Says Who?

Use SteelWise articles to brush up on your (and your students') steel know-how.

The SteelWise feature in Modern Steel Construction provides practical knowledge on a number of topics, ranging from stability analysis, to how choice of corrosion protection affects connection design, to practical considerations for expansion joints in buildings.
The August 2013 SteelWise installment provides a concise overview of design information available from AISC. This information ranges from the Manual and Specification to Engineering Journal articles and NASCC proceedings. This comprehensive guide breaks down the "who," "what" and "how" of (e.g., the process behind) various AISC documents and resources.
