Professor Givan's ECE 473 Office Hours

Professor Givan's availability outside of class is by personal Zoom meeting arranged at our joint convenience as outlined below.

(If you are not in ECE 473 and need to meet with Professor Givan, start with an email explaining your meeting request. Repeat this email if it isn't answered.)

Individual Zoom get-to-know-the-professor meetings with ECE 473 students can be arranged by email or text message. I would be delighted to meet you. Likewise, you are welcome to arrange a meeting to discuss a course administrative issue or to provide your feedback on the course, if you are not satisfied with what we achieve by email first.

Individual Zoom meetings with the professor on course content can be arranged by the following process.

1. Post your questions on Piazza. These must be public (but can be anonymous) unless they contain homework solutions or sensitive personal material.
2. Interact with the answers provided on Piazza until it is not helping you further. (Hopefully it is promptly answered and eventually thoroughly resolved, but if not...)
3. Consider whether the topic can wait for the next Tuesday in-person Q&A. (If the topic involves details of a homework question, wait until after the solutions are distributed before discussing in my office hours; I limit my homework help to extensive Piazza investment and the live Q&A session.)
4. Email or text the professor requesting a Zoom meeting and pointing at the thread on Piazza you wish to discuss further. Include in this message several meeting time options that work well for you (and any others involved).

This process is intended to filter, not discourage, additional Zoom meetings. These meetings are an important synchronous part of the course, helping replacing in-class Q&A when the weekly Tuesday time doesn't resolve the issue. The individual Zoom meeting process is not intended for basic help on individual homework problems. These are for you to solve, and the teaching assistants are available for getting you unstuck. The professor's role is primarily in clarifying and explaining the broader concepts taught, in particular clarifying every statement in every lecture.
